Last year and this year

Last year I think I went a tiny bit insane and fill my garden to the brim. Little did I know that the weeds would be so bad that I couldn't keep up with them. So long story short, basically this year I've scaled back quite a bit.

Last year I grew:
  • Cantalope (it did ok and I did end up eating at least two fruits; the squirells at the rest before they ripened)
  • Spinach (it bolted before I could get any. I think it was just too hot)
  • 4 type of tomato (pear-shaped cherry tomatoes, Heinz tomatos, roma tomatos and big boy; The cherry tomatoes produced like crazy and the rest didn't do as well)
  • Jalapenos (I did get a couple of peppers, but the pepper plants ended up competing with the weeds)
  • Peaches and Cream Corn (I got at least 8 small cobs of corn and it tasted really good, but I had problems with animals eating the stalks and corn smut.)
  • Pickling cucumbers (I did get some, but they were curved. I think the cucumber plant ended up getting some sort of disease because the leaves turned yellow and brown.)
  • Butternut squash (actually faired really well and I ended up getting at least 4 squash out of the plant. This is a case of the weeds actually helping since the weeds hid the squash from the squirells.)
  • Cauliflower (this was actually a mistake, I meant to grab brusselsprout but got cauliflower instead. I grew it and I did get some (in chunks), but it was too warm and it bolted before making a proper cauliflower head).
This year is going to be different. I'm growing pie pumpkins, jalapenos and Roma tomatoes. I might do spinach in long planter, but not in the garden. I'm also going to be laying some black fabric to keep the weeds down. In the long run I should get a better crop this year.

It's been 23 days since I planted my pumpkins and jalapenos and about 19 days for my tomato plants.
So far so good. I've transplanted most of the pumpkins into their own peat pots since they had out grown their little dirt cubes. So far so good. I've notice a bit of an issue with the primary leaf though, I'm worried that it might be too cold in my basement.

(Left) Here's the jalapenos and tomatoes (tomatoes are just the one row on the right side) The rest of the rows are jalapenos.

(Right) Here's some of my pumpkin plants. The one plant in the right corner got knocked over and I've got it splinted so it doesn't die on me.
My mother-in-law gave me a herb planter for easter. It came with 2 packs of parsley and one pack of basil. They are 23 days old and they've already started getting their secondary leaves.
